Education is the most important invention of mankind. It is more important than his invention of tools, machines, spacecrafts, medicine, and weapons. Man without education would be treated as illiterate. It is education, which transformed man from illiterate to literate. The education helps man to understand the problems and plan to solve the problem.1 It develops the knowledge. Education of man does not begin at school; it begins at birth. It ends not when he graduates from the university but at his death. Hence, education is a lifelong process.
Education is recognized as one of the critical elements of the national development effort and Higher education, in particular, is of vital importance for the nation, as it is a powerful tool to build knowledge-based society of the 21stcentury. The activity of Department of Higher Education is focused towards developing India as a knowledge society.2 Education plays an important role in social change. While, on one hand, it is responsible for handling down traditions, customs, culture, knowledge and skills from one generation to other, on the other, it acts as an agent of social change.3 New ideas and values are initiated by it and become the goals of the young generation to pursue and achieve.
Importance of Education
Education plays a very important role in our lives. Everyone has being educated since the day they were born.4 Education is not at all about studying and getting good marks. It is really a means to discover new things which we don’t know about and increase our knowledge. An Educated person has the ability to differentiate between right and wrong or good and evil. It is the foremost responsibility of a society to educate its citizens. A person becomes perfect with education as he is not only gaining something from it, but also contributing to the growth of a nation. We must realize the importance of education.5 We must aim to ensure that each citizen of our nation is educated and independent.
Education makes us broad minded. Education forms the basis of any society. It is responsible for the economic, social and political growth and development of society in general. Education imparts knowledge, whereby making discoveries and implementing them for the development of the society becomes possible. The importance of education goes beyond the concept of being literate. It goes much deeper, in denoting a way of life and thinking. Education today has become synonymous with being a well-informed, thinking person.6
